Hello Indivisibles,
Yesterday’s elections were a stunning win for the forces needed to halt the abuses and the take-over ambitions of this regime. What is most impressive is that the elections were for such varied offices, in so many different states, with such diverse candidates … and one election with no candidate at all! Yes, these were mostly blue or purple states, but the results were resounding, even where the polls said it would be close.
Virginia won a Democratic Governor, Lt. Governor, and Attorney General and flipped 13 seats in the House of Delegates. In Mississippi, two seats were flipped in the State Senate to crack a GOP supermajority in a deeply red state. In Georgia, two seats flipped to Democrats on the Public Service Commission, which were the first non-federal wins for a Democrat in nearly two decades. In Pennsylvania, three Supreme Court Justices retained their seats against MAGA challengers, despite enormous amounts of money spent to unseat them. In California Proposition 50 won by an overwhelming majority: 63.8%to 36.2%. This allows CA to redraw their voting maps to counter the gerrymandering just done by TX to give them 5 more potential seats in the US House. In New Jersey, there will be a Democratic Governor, even though it was thought the race was close. It wasn’t. And, of course, in New York City, there is a new sheriff in town: A Democratic Socialist won over 50% of the vote, even without full support of the Democratic party.
There have been a couple of truly astonishing things that have made me sit back and say, “Whoa! Imagine that!”.
One: In the NYC race, the Republican party managed only a vanishingly small percentage of the vote: 7.1%. Whoa!
Two: In the NYC race, Trump endorsed Cuomo! (the previous Democratic Governor of NY who was running as an Independent because he lost the Democratic primary in this race). And then, Elon Musk endorsed Cuomo (Democrat disguised as an Independant)
Three: NBC released a poll done Oct. 24 – 26. One of the questions was “Do you consider yourself a supporter of …”
MAGA = 30%
NO KINGS PROTESTS = 43%
We had over 7-8 million people come out to the last No Kings protest, that’s, what?, 2% to 2.5% of the population? We think we need to break 3.5% to be effective? But the silent support is huge. It is way bigger than I imagined, anyway!
Now a word about Republicans vs Democrats.
First, I am a devout Independent.
When Indivisibles cheer because a Democrat has won over a Republican, it is NOT because of their political party affiliation. It is because, right now, the political reality is that, for some reason, the “Republican” party has shape-shifted into something unrecognizable. And, in Congress at least, the GOP has become a puppet body, controlled by Trump, Miller, Vought, etc. This has allowed him (them) to launch an Authoritarian Takeover of our Democratic form of government. We intend to prevent this from being completed.
For now, that means that either the GOP in Congress have to stop their absolute subservience to Trump, or the Democrats have to take back control from the GOP and they will stop Trump. And, remember, if the current situation persists, with GOP control of the Senate, Trump will almost certainly get to appoint one, or possibly, two more Supreme Court Justices. Thomas will be replaced with someone younger and …
So, I don’t know what to call the Republican members of Congress anymore. They have forsaken almost all of their conservative values that are the definition of being a Republican. They don’t blink an eye at the grotesque corruption, the abuse of power, the damage to their constituents, the destruction of the economy, the ballooning deficit, the pardoning of the mob that attacked our Capitol and threatened members of Congress and beat police officers. And the subservience to and protection of sex offenders. My friends who are conservative Republicans, tell me that they don’t recognize what their party has become. They are dismayed. They don’t feel like they belong to the Republican Party anymore – or, rather, that it has abandoned them. They don’t support this ‘new’ version. So what am I supposed to call the GOP members of Congress, if they are no longer real Republicans? Trumpettes?
We are all in Indivisible because we want to stop the destruction of our country and our Democracy. We come from many points of view and political positions. We will never all agree on everything. But we do agree on this one thing, that Trump and this Authoritarian assault must be stopped. I know that there are true Republicans in our movement. There are even Libertarians here. And there are people who used to support Trump. And we all are determined to stop this madness.
So it makes me a little psycho when I have to encourage us to take action to have a “Democrat win over a Republican”, when what I really mean is to take action to have “someone who will oppose Trump, win over someone who will acquiesce to his every crazy command”. I need a new dictionary. I don’t want to have to use the terms Democrat and Republican. But I have no other words. Bear with me. The truth is we want as many true Republicans as possible in this movement. But I constantly fear alienating them with the two-party terms I have to use. I realize this will only get harder as we transition to a fight for the midterms.
And now a word about our Postcard Team. They hand wrote and mailed over 2000 postcards to voters in Pennsylvania to encourage them to vote to retain the 3 Supreme Court Justices there and prevent a MAGA takeover of that court which could then interfere in the elections in 2026 and 2028. I echo the praise for them from the leader of this group, Doug:Postcard Warriors-
Thanks to you and millions like you Pennsylvania will continue with a Democratic majority in their Supreme Court. More importantly you sent a message “Don’t screw around with our democracy.”
Unfortunately this message will need to be sent over and over.
See ya in 2026.
For now, I intend to keep this silly smile on my face all day. Nov. 4, 2025 was a great election day!
Cheers,
Marilyn Lagrow
